Diggin' It With UB Volleyball - Week 1

Each week this season we will check in with the UB Volleyball team and preview their week ahead.

This past weekend was our first weekend on the road and it proved to be a tough one at times, it definitely had its ups and downs, there were some peaks and valleys…it was simple like a rollercoaster!
After a good morning practice and team lunch we headed to the bus to get going on our first trip of the year! For some reason all the newcomers decided to sit 2 to a seat but after about twenty minutes the upper classmen convinced them to spread out and get comfortable.  After some movie watching and naps the newcomers decided it was time to do something special for their upper classmen and wrote and recited the poems they wrote for us.  We were very impressed and adopted the poems as a new team tradition.
 
Saturday morning came quickly and there was a buzz of excitement in the air because the start of the season was ACTUALLY here. That first match was ugly at times but ended in our favor with a 3-0 victory over Youngstown State. Later that night we took on host team West Virginia and ended up dropping the match 3-1. Once again we had moments of flawless play and those of not-so-flawless play but you learn more in a defeat than in a win so we all took a lot away from the match.
 
Although we suffered the tough loss the team morale was heightened when Kayla snuck into Assistant Coach Jenni's room only to jump out of her closest and scare her while the team stood outside and watched. While we were getting a good laugh Jenni was on the ground saying she was going to pee her pants from laughing so hard! The night ended on a funny and soggy (team inside joke!) note as we all headed off to bed.
 
The next morning the team refocused to take on Howard at 11am. We walked away with a 3-0-team victory that everyone contributed to. After a nice meal that some of our families got to join in on, we boarded the bus and headed back to Buffalo. The team started getting ready to tackle the first day of classes and an exciting week of matches, which include playing at Niagara on Wednesday, and our first home matches this Friday at 11 and 7 and Saturday at 5.

HOME OPENER FRIDAY!

 

Catch the women's volleyball team this weekend at Alumni Arena as they host Navy, Delaware State and Central Connecticut State in the UB Invitational. On Friday, UB takes on Navy at 11am in the home opener and Delaware State later at 7pm.

 

On Saturday, the Bulls face Central Connecticut State at 5pm in the first of six Family Nights at Alumni Arena. Young fans can visit the Kidzone before the game, and all fans are invited to meet members of the UB team at a postgame autograph.

STAT OF THE WEEK

The Bulls recorded 24 service aces through their first three matches.  Last season, it took UB six matches to reach 24 services aces.
