YPSILANTI, MI – University at Buffalo senior Diana Popescu was honored by the Mid-American Conference on Thursday night as she was named to the All-MAC First Team and a co-recipient of the Leann Grimes Davidge Sportsmanship Award.
Popescu is 14-10 in singles this season, including a 5-3 mark at first singles in conference play. Popescu also had a very successful doubles season as she combined with freshman Miranda Podlas to go 6-2 in the conference at first doubles and 10-3 overall.
Popescu shared the honor of the Leann Grimes Davidge Sportsmanship Award with Bowling Green's Christina Chiricosta. The award is presented to the player who has displayed outstanding sportsmanship in MAC competition.
Akron's Zara Hartutyunyan, who was named MAC Player of the Year, joined Popescu on the first team. Also on the team was Anastasia Dracheva and Stephanie Danesis from Miami, Chiricosta from BG and Nina Sujashvili from Western Michigan, who was announced as the Freshman of the Year.
The Bulls begin tournament play tomorrow as they face Akron in the conference quarterfinals.
