HANOVER, NH - The University at Buffalo women's
tennis team sent two players to the ITA Regionals this past
weekend, putting one into the round of 32.
Senior Diana Popescu and Aleksandra Petrova both picked up wins in
the singles draw of the tournament. Popescu had a first round
bye, but Petrova picked up a win in the first round over Ryan
Reichel from Dartmouth, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to reach the round of
64. Petrova fell in the second round to fourth-seed vicky
Brook from Yale, 6-2, 6-2. Popescu won her match over Jamila
Paul of Army easily, 6-1, 6-1 to move into the round of 32.
Popescu, who was seeded 17th in the singles bracket, lost a tough
fought match in the round of 32 to the fifth seed Molly Scott from
Dartmouth, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Popescu and Petrova began doubles play in the tournament yesterday,
but lost in the first round to Silia DeFilippis and Annie Sullivan
of Yale, 9-8 (3).
The Bulls will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 5 when they have
their first dual match of the season at Quinnipiac.
