ITHACA, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team completed play at the Cornell Invitational on Sunday afternoon with sophomore Kira Golenko claiming a consolation bracket championship.
The Bulls had two players reach the singles finals of their flight with both players falling short to some stiff competition. Senior Diana Popescu reached the "A" Flight finals where she lost 6-3, 6-3 to Jillian Santos of Binghamton. It was one of two matches for Popescu, who played doubles as well. Popescu and senior Aleksandra Petrova dropped a close 9-7 decision in the semifinals of the "A" Doubles Flight to Lauren Bates and Emma Leibowicz of Binghamton.
The "B" Singles Consolation Final was an all UB affair as Golenko met up with freshman Marta Stoyanova, which Golenko won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Miranda Podlas reached the finals of the "C" Singles Flight where she fell 6-3, 6-4 to Geraldine Leong of Cornell.
The Bulls are now off until October 9 when they head to the National Tennis Center Invite in Flushing Meadows, NY.
