ITHACA, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team completed its second day at the Cornell Invitational with two individuals reaching the finals of their respective singles flights. The Bulls also had one doubles team reach the semifinals of their flight.
In singles, senior Diana Popescu reached the "A" Flight finals with a pair of straight set victories on the day. Popescu began Saturday with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Sarah O'Neil of Cornell and followed that up with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Maddie Kobelt of Syracuse. Popescu reached Sunday's final where she will face Jillian Santos of Binghamton. Fellow senior Aleksandra Petrova reached the consolation final, picking up an 8-3 victory over Jacquelynn Tang from Syracuse.
In the "B" Singles Flight sophomore Kira Golenko took a bye in to the consolation semifinals and then reached the consolation finals with an 8-3 victory over Yulia Smirnova from Binghamton. Meeting Golenko in the finals is fellow teammate, freshman Marta Stoyanova who had a pair of singles victories. Stoyanova defeated Jenn Marquet of Colgate 8-3 and then after a bye in the quarterfinals, defeated Maria Barousse of St. Bonaventure, 8-2, to reach the finals.
In the "C" Singles Flight freshman Miranda Podlas has reached Sunday's final round. Podlas, who had a bye in the opening round yesterday, opened the day with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Leah Seybum from Cornell and then defeated Kristen Kohagen from Cornell, 0-6, 6-3, 12-10. Sophomore Shelby Bates also had a victory in the "C" Flight with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Eva Raszkiewicz of Syracuse.
In doubles action, UB sent its number one team of Popescu and Petrova into the semifinals of the "A" Flight with an 8-5 win over O'Neil and Ordway from Cornell.
Competition concludes at the Cornell Invitational on Sunday.
