ITHACA, NY - The University at Buffalo women's tennis team began the 2010-11 season on Friday as the Bulls competed at the Cornell Invite. The Invitational is comprised of three singles flights and two doubles flights.
Three Bulls were in the "A" Singles Flight led by senior Diana Popescu, who was the second ranked player in the field. Popescu advanced to the second round with a 6-0, 6-2 victory against Manuela Martin of St. Bonaventure. Sophomore Tamara Markovic also had a first round victory over Alex Petrini of Colgate, 6-1, 6-1. Aleksandra Petrova dropped her first singles match in three sets.
In the "B" Singles Flight, freshman Dominica Nemec was ranked second and she picked up a three set win over Maria Barousse of St. Bonaventure, 6-2, 2-6, 10-3. Freshman Marta Stoyanova and sophomore Kira Golenko both lost first round matches. Playing the "C" Singles Flight, sophomore Shelby Bates had a 6-0, 6-0 straight sets victory over Meredith Haggerty of St. Bonaventure, while freshman Miranda Podlas got a bye straight into the second round as the second-ranked player in the flight.
In doubles action, UB sent both of its teams into the second round of the "A" Doubles Flight. UB's first doubles team of Popescu and Petrova had an easy road into the second round as they got a bye as the top ranked team in the field. Markovic and Podlas had to earn their way into the second round with an 8-6 victory over a duo from Syracuse. In the "B" Doubles Flight, Golenko and Nemc picked up a bye in the first round, while Bates and Stoyanova won their match 8-0 over Colgate's Marguet and Silvers.
