BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's tennis team continued to place players in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional rankings this year as the Bulls were found in both the Northeast singles and doubles rankings that were released on Jan. 5.
Last season both players were ranked in the larger East region, but this season the ITA moved to 12 regions, putting UB in the Northeast with schools from New York, New Jersey and New England. SeniorDenise Harijanto was listed as the 14th best player in the region following a 5-6 record this fall against some of the nation's top competition. Harijanto played in the ITA Regionals, the ITA All-American Championships and the USTA National Tennis Center Invite. Harijanto is currently third all-time in singles wins at UB as she begins the spring season.
In doubles, the team of Harijanto and junior Diana Popescu has picked up a regional ranking of seventh in the Northeast. The duo went 7-5 this fall reaching the quarterfinals of the ITA Regionals. They also picked up a win at the ITA All-American Championships before falling in the second round to a Wichita State team that is regionally ranked, 9-7. As a doubles team, Harijanto and Popescu have combined for a 49-18 record over the last two and a half years.
The Bulls will begin their spring season on Saturday, Jan. 23 when they host St. John's at the Miller Tennis Center, UB's new indoor home for tennis.
