Women's Rowing Opens Season at Cardinal Invite

OAK RIDGE, TN – The University at Buffalo Women's Rowing team opened the season at the two day Cardinal Invite competing against the likes of Virginia, Notre Dame and Georgetown.

The Bulls excelled in the morning session of races with both the novice eight and the second varsity eight earning first place finishes. Coxswain Courtney Donovan, Quaneisha Ivey, Anna Lipinska, Colleen Patterson, Allyssa Cotten, Clare Costello, Vanessa Ho, Erica Tenteromano and Sara Oliphant of the novice eight boat raced top a place finish over Miami. While the second varsity eight rowers, coxswain Alyssa Porter, Alexa Shoiock, Kaitlyn Koscielniak, Mackenzie Turpin, Elizabeth Murphy, Melissa Ward, Meghan O'Brien, Brittany Davidson and Sydney Gilchrist topped Miami and Eastern Michigan. 

The varsity four "B" boat took second behind Alabama. This boat was controlled by coxswain Katie Boniello, Veronika Kwinecki, Bethany Cross, Alyssa Gabel and Jessica Levy.

UB's lightweight eight competed against other lightweights as well as second varsity eight boats because not many schools at the Invite had lightweight boats. Coxswain Christine Proulx, Maggie Lawn, Hanna Victor, Katie Coffin, Megan Klyczek, Cassandra Nicolia, Jackie Parente, Taylor Nilsen and Jean Kang finished in fourth behind Notre Dame, Duke and Kansas.

The novice four, varsity eight and varsity four "A" all took second in their respective races. Coxswain Tori Moliski, Taylor Hagenbuch, Arielle Fleming, Caroline Lodinsky and Rebecca Fabian made up the novice four boat.  Coxswain Emily Glasgow, Heide MacMahon, Rosa Kemp, Shannon David, Samantha Paige, Hayley Franco, Deborah Garth, Justine Bottorff and Danielle Carlino raced the varsity eight. While coxswain Kara Buchheit, Francisca Strange-Sepulveda, Hannah Miller-Selzer, Jordyn Phillips and Sara-Ann Fox manned the varsity four "A" boat. 

During the afternoon session, UB put all its boats back on the water to compete against Alabama and Kansas.

The varsity eight, varsity four "A", second varsity eight and varsity four "B" all took second in their individual races.

The varsity eight finished behind Alabama while the varsity four "A" was behind Kansas.

The second varsity eight finished following Kansas, the lightweight also competed in this race finishing fourth and the varsity four "B" after Kansas.

The novice four competed in the last event of the day rowing against a varsity four squad from Kansas.

The Bulls will be back on the water tomorrow for day two of the Cardinal Invite with UB's first boat racing at 10:56 a.m. as the team looks to continue a strong performance in its first race of the season.
