Gold Medal Winning Lightweight 4 Highlights Knecht Cup
CHERRY HILL, NJ – The University at Buffalo rowing team competed at the Knecht Cup in New Jersey this weekend and turned in a number of solid performances. The highlight of the weekend was the lightweight four boat winning the gold medal – marking the first time a UB lightweight boat had ever won the gold medal at the Knecht Cup.
The lightweight four boat of Katherine Evely, Margaret Lawn, Julia Hahn, Katie Coffin and Cornelia Willis finished with fasted time on Saturday to advance to the finals on Sunday where they won the race with a time of 7:41.19. They finished over nine seconds ahead of second-place Penn State.
The varsity eight boat also had a strong showing as they won their heat to advance to the grand final where they finished third. The varsity eight boat consisted of Alison Sheehan, Rosa Kemp, Hannah Miller-Selzer , Jacklyn Postulka, Heide MacMahon-Manning, Kaitlyn Koscielniak, Shannon David, Sydney Gilchrist and Brittany Ronald. The varsity eight race had 38 entrants, making UB's result even more impressive.
UB's second varsity eight boat of Emily Glasgow, Danielle Carlino, Sarah Gallagher, Deborah Garth, Hayley Franco, Justine Bottorff, Francisca Strange-Sepulva, Brittany Davidson, and Elizabeth Murphy finished third in their heat on Saturday to qualify for the petite final on Sunday. The Bulls placed fifth with a time of 7:01.33.
The lightweight eight boat of Katherine Evely, Margaret Lawn, Megan Klyczek, Julia Hahn, Cornelia Willis, Katie Coffin, Jean Kang, Haley Bryk and Jessica Ashbaugh finished third in Saturday's heat to advanced to Sunday's final. UB finished sixth in the final against top-notched competition, including Wisconsin, Princeton, Georgetown and Bucknell, with a time of 7:03.88.
In the varsity four race, the Bulls advanced to the third final where they finished fourth with a time of 8:16.14. UB finished ahead of Rutgers and Temple.
The novice eight boat of Katie Boniello, Sara-Ann Fox, Alyssa Gabel, Melissa Ward, Jessica Levy, Alexa Shoiock, Nicole Ciesielski, Stephanie Iannacchino and Jordyn Phillips advanced to the petite final where they finished third with a time of 7:13.48. UB finished ahead of boats from Connecticut, Marist and Duke.
Overall is was a strong performance for the Bulls as six of their seven boats advanced to Sunday's finals.
