Bulls Compete at Murphy Cup

Cooper River, NJ - The University at Buffalo rowing team competed at the Murphy Cup on the Cooper River in New Jersey on Saturday afternoon. Head Coach Rudy Wieler was pleased with the results as he feels his team is continuing to improve.

"I am encouraged that we are moving in the right direction," Wieler said. "We want to have four solid weights, moving forward."

The lightweight eight boat of Katherine Evely, Margaret Lawn, Megan Klyczek, Julia Hahn, Cornelia Willis, Katie Coffin, Jean Kang, Haley Bryk and Jessica Ashbaugh cruised to an easy victory with a time of 8:06.19. The Bulls finished over 21 seconds ahead of second-place Temple. They also defeated Lafayette and Massachusetts in the race.

The varsity eight boat won its heat with a time of 7:45.38, six seconds ahead of second-place Saint Joseph's, to advance to the finals. Consisting of Alison Sheehan, Jacklyn Postulka, Hannah Miller-Selzer, Rosa Kemp, Heide MacMahon-Manning, Deborah Garth, Shannon David, Sydney Gilchrist and Brittany Ronald, the Bulls finished third in the finals with a time of 7:47.08. Navy won the race with at time of 7:27.44.  UB finished ahead of crews from Saint Joseph's, Massachusetts and Bucknell.

UB's second varsity eight boat of Emily Glasgow, Sarah Gallagher, Francisca Strange-Sepulva, Kaitlyn Koscielniak, Danielle Carlino, Justine Bottorff, Hayley Franco, Brittany Davidson and Elizabeth Murphy won their heat with a time of 7:53.10 to advance to the finals. The Bulls defeated second-place Saint Joseph's by over 10 seconds.

However, the Bulls didn't race in the finals after, according to Wieler, an interesting decision was made by the officials that caused the second varsity eight not to compete in the race.

The first novice eight boat of Katie Boniello, Sara-Ann Fox, Alyssa Gabel, Melissa Ward, Jessica Levy, Alexa Shoiock, Nicole Ciesielski, Stephanie Iannacchino and Jordyn Phillips finished second in its heat, less than five seconds behind Delaware and finished ahead of Villanova, Vassar and Temple

The second novice eight boat of Christine Proulx, Bailey Gillies, Amber Gurman, Emily Daigler, Mazie Feenstra-Swensen, Holly Ross, Cammie Farkas, Olivia Gane and Cassandra Nicola finished third with a time of 9:02.06, ahead of Marist (9:07.24) and Lafayette (9:11.92). Drexel won the race with a time of 8:16.56.

In the varsity four race, the UB boat of Kara Buchheit, Kylie Lewis, Rachel Cuthbert, Veronika Kwinecki and Bethany Cross finished fifth, behind Massachusetts, George Washington, Navy and Robert Morris.
