John Stutzman Hired as University at Buffalo Wrestling Head Coach
After a standout career on the mats in Alumni Arena, John Stutzman will begin a new era of Buffalo wrestling as its head coach. After eight seasons developing Bloomsburg into a national power, Stutzman has been hired as the 15th coach in the 79-year-history of the program, University at Buffalo Director of Athletics Danny White announced on Tuesday.

For the third time in his illustrious career, senior wrestler John-Martin Cannon was named to the Mid-American Conference's All-Academic Team, as announced by the conference Wednesday. The Buffalo wrestling team's four national qualifiers finished up their first day of the NCAA tournament, held at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, IA. MAC Wrestling Championships Come to Alumni Arena
Some of the very best talent in the nation will be on display at Alumni Arena on Sunday, as the new era of Mid-American Conference wrestling begins. The all-day eight-team tournament that features 41 individuals ranked in the final NCAA coaches top-33 rankings. This marks the first time that fourth-ranked Missouri and 22nd-ranked Northern Iowa join the MAC, expanding the field to eight teams.

Wrestling Championship Qualifier Bids Released by NCAA
The NCAA has announced the qualifier allocations for the 2013 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, to be held in Des Moines, Iowa from March 21-23. The Mid-American Conference received 30 auto-qualifier bids, the third most of any conference in the nation. Those 30 bids will be up for grabs at the upcoming MAC Championship, to be hosted by the University at Buffalo on March 10.

UB Wrestling Offers Support in its Annual Trip to Roswell Park
Members of the The University at Buffalo wrestling staff and team took some time away from preparing for the Mid-American Conference tournament to visit Carly's Club at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. The group was given a tour of the facilities and met with young cancer patient and her mother, who the team is supporting this season with a $5,000 donation made from the $15,000 in total funds raised by the Takedown Cancer event.

The Buffalo wrestling team won five of the first six matches against Mid-American Conference rival Kent State Sunday afternoon in Alumni Arena, but four straight bonus-point wins allowed the Flashes come back for a 22-19 win. The Bulls held a 19-3 lead in the dual through the first six matches. The loss drops Buffalo to 1-9 and 1-3 in the MAC. Kent State moves to 7-4 and 3-1 in conference duals.

Last weekend was a frustrating one for the Buffalo wrestling team, with two of the three matches wrestled at the Virginia Duals being lost in the final bout of the match - heavyweight - to fall to 0-7 on the season. On Friday night, though, both monkeys were thrown off UB's back and thrown to the mat, as the Bulls (1-7, 1-1 MAC) beat the Eastern Michigan Eagles (6-10, 0-2 MAC) 19-14 at Alumni Arena.

Lewandowski Earns Win #100, Bulls Lose to Edinboro
The Buffalo wrestling team continued to struggle through a tough early season schedule Sunday afternoon, losing to 17th ranked Edinboro 28-9. The Bulls (0-4) saw wins by Max Soria, Mark Lewandowski, and John-Martin Cannon, but depth concerns would plague the team in the loss. The win by Lewandowski was the 100th of the senior's career at UB, making him the eighth wrestler in program history to reach the mark.

Three Bulls Place at Brute Invitational
Led by Wally Maziarz's second-place finish at 157 pounds, a trio of UB wrestlers placed in the top four at the Brute Invitational Saturday, hosted by Lock Haven University. Max Soria finished fourth at 125 and Blake Roulo placed third for the team, which sent a total of 12 wrestlers to the event. The team placed seventh out of 13 teams.

Led by John-Martin Cannon's fourth-place finish, all three Bulls sent to the 2012 Ken Kraft 50th Midlands Championships placed in the top seven, setting a program record for the team at the prestigious midseason national tournament. Despite sending just two attached wrestlers - Cannon and Mark Lewandowski - the Bulls "team" finished twenty-first out of the 45 total teams in attendance.

The Buffalo wrestling team rallied strong from its Monday night loss to Iowa, but could not close the deal for its first win of the season on Tuesday and lost 18-15 to Bloomsburg. The Bulls (0-3) and Huskies (7-2) won five matches apiece, but Bloomsburg scored a technical fall and major decision to boost it to the win.

The Buffalo wrestling team will open its home schedule with the biggest name in college wrestling on Monday night, welcoming in the Iowa Hawkeyes for the fourth annual Takedown Cancer dual and fundraiser. The team hopes to not only make history on the mat, but also set new donation records to help the team Takedown Cancer and honor its former teammate and friend, Jeff Parker.

A crowd of over 1,700 fans came out to Alumni Arena for the fourth annual Takedown Cancer fundraiser and dual on Monday evening, as the Bulls (0-2) hosted the fifth-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes. The event, which raised over $14,000 for cancer research for the day, was marked with explosive offense between the two teams, with the Hawkeyes (10-0) prevailing 39-3. Mark Lewandowski earned a win at 165 pounds for the team's lone win.

Bulls Frustrated in Dual-Season Opener, 28-7
The Buffalo wrestling team opened its dual and Mid-American Conference season Saturday afternoon, taking to the road to face #11 Central Michigan. The Bulls (0-1, 0-1 MAC) were stymied in a 0-0 loss, with a final score deceptive of the dual itself. Six matches were decided by two points or less, with the Bulls losing five of the six, and neither the Chippewas or the Bulls would score more than four points in a single bout until the final three matches of the day.

Lewandowski Places Second at Nittany Lion Open
Senior Mark Lewandowski rolled to a second-place finish on Sunday at the Nittany Lion Open, losing only to returning national champion David Taylor of Penn State in the 165-pound bracket final. It was Lewandowski's first loss of the season, snapping a 13-match win streak to start out the year. Three Bulls total placed in the top eight, with Max Soria finishing seventh at 125 pounds and Wally Maziarz placing eighth at 157 pounds.

Fresh off his first New York State title, incoming wrestling recruit Tony Lock added some more hardware to his collection, winning the 182-pound title at the 2012 National High School Coaches Association Senior Tournament Sunday afternoon. The Pioneer High School senior defeated Nolan Boyd of Oklahoma 5-4 in overtime for the national championship.

While the team's split the matches five apiece, the Bobcats scored two pins and a major decision. It was also senior day for UB, with the team honoring seniors Tyler Peter, Taylor Golba, and Kevin Smith.

Two Bulls Earn Academic All-MAC Honors
After leading the team with terrific junior seasons, Kevin Smith and John-Martin Cannon were named to the 10-player Academic All-MAC team. The conference announced the selections today, as voted by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.

Redshirt Junior Kevin Smith became the sixth Buffalo Bulls wrestler to earn a trip to the NCAA tournament this season after earning an at-large bid during the selection process held Wednesday night. The draw was for the 50 possible wrestlers who did not earn an automatic qualification. The six Buffalo national qualifiers were the most since the Bulls joined the Mid American Conference.

On Sunday February 20th the Buffalo Bulls wrestling team defeated Northern Illinois by a score of 22-9 in the Division of Athletics second annual “TAKEDOWN CANCER” fundraiser in memory of Jeffrey D. Parker, former student and member of the Bulls wrestling team. Parker lost his battle with cancer on May 22, 2010. Jimmy Hamel: A Dozen Reasons to Respect Hard Work
Jimmy Hamel walked on to the University at Buffalo campus with his father and older brother in tow. A Massachusetts state champion in 2006, Hamel was asked to fill the shoes of outgoing All-American Kyle Cerminara. Following day one of the 2010 NCAA National Wrestling Championships at the Qwest Center Omaha in Omaha, NE, two Bulls remained standing, 18th nationally-ranked Desi Green and 17th nationally-ranked Kevin Smith. Sophomore Desi Green captured the 149-pound title at the Mid-American Conference Championships on Sunday afternoon at the Rose Center on the campus of Central Michigan University. The Bulls finished in fourth place with 60.5 points including eight wrestlers earning top four finishes. Senior Dan Bishop, junior Jimmy Hamel and sophomore Kevin Smith finished in second place at 125, 197 and 133, respectively.

Bulls Fall to Ohio in Conference Home Opener, 22-17
The University at Buffalo wrestling team opened Mid-American Conference action by falling to Ohio, 22-17, at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. Despite the loss in the battle against Ohio, the war against cancer was won. The Bulls and the UB Division of Athletics raised $30,097 at "Takedown Cancer" to benefit former co-captain and 2008 graduate Jeff Parker, Carly's Club of Buffalo and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA.

University at Buffalo sophomore John-Martin Cannon has been selected as the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week. The 20th nationally-ranked wrestler, posted a 4-0 record to capture the 165-pound title including a decision over 14th-ranked Justin Kerber of Cornell at the New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships on January 23-24 at Cornell University.

The University at Buffalo wrestling team recorded a third place-finish at the 41st annual New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships held Sunday at Newman Arena on the campus of Cornell University. The reigning champion Bulls scored 149.5 points behind Army (158) and sixth nationally-ranked host Cornell (194). Sophomore John-Martin Cannon captured the 165-pound crown by upsetting 16th nationally-ranked Justin Kerber of Cornell, 3-1, in overtime.

Over the two-day event, seven Bulls recorded multiple victories in their respective weight classes. The event concluded on Saturday with John-Martin Cannon recording the Bulls’ top individual finish of seventh place in the 165-pound weight class.

This marks the first time in Smith's career that he has garnered such national recognition.
