BUFFALO, NY - Thanks in part to two losses literally in the last seconds of the match at 133 and 157 pounds, the Buffalo wrestling team opened its 2011-12 Mid-American Conference season with a 30-6 loss to eighteenth-ranked Central Michigan. The Bulls won two matches and lost four other matches by three points or less.
The Chippewas won the first two matches at 125 and 133 pounds, including a takedown with one second remaining to give CMU's Tyler Keselring a 4-2 decision over Justin Farmer. The Bulls answered back with two straight wins to knot the dual back up at six all, starting with Kevin Smith at 141 pounds.
Smith almost earned a pin in the first period after a takedown that earned him favorable postition and, eventually, three near-fall points and a 5-1 lead after just the first period. Smith was unable to capitalize on his opponent from there on but still earned a 7-4 decision. The win was his 105th overall and 41st in duals, moving him into sole possession of fourth and fifth in those categories, respectively, for his career.
In the 149 match, Chris Conti moved up in weight and put together the best match of any Buffalo wrestler on the day, beating Malcolm Martin 6-1. Conti got a quick takedown and carried a 2-1 lead into the third and final period. Starting on the bottom position, Conti got a penalty point and then reversed his opponent, securing a riding time point and the win.
With the loss, Buffalo drops to 0-6 in dual meets and now is 0-1 in MAC play. Central Michigan improves to 2-0 in the conference and is 7-2 overall. Next up for UB will be a quad meet next Sunday. The event will be held at Niagara County Community College due to on-going renovations to Alumni Arena. The quad will feature Bloomsburg, Gardner-Webb and Pittsburgh-Johnstown and will begin at 11 am.
