Bulls Invited To First Ever Postseason Tournament; Head To Wright State Wednesday Night
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team has been invited to the Women's Basketball Invitational, its first ever trip to a postseason tournament. The Bulls will face Wright State in the first round of the tournament, Wednesday night at Wright State's Nutter Center.
The Wright State/Buffalo winner will face the winner of Sacred Heart and Manhattan in the quarterfinals with the date and site to be determined.
"It's exciting and a real honor," said head coach Linda Hill-MacDonald. " Certainly we're thrilled to have another opportunity to play. Especially now that it's postseason and the tournaments are down to what are considered the teams deserving of an extended season. I think it will help the profile of this team and program. Anytime you have a postseason honor I think it is a big plus."
The Bulls enter the tournament with a 16-15 record and are led by the 2011 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year Kourtney Brown. Brown ranks fifth nationally in rebounds (11.8) and blocked shots (3.3) per game, is seventh in field goal percentage (.588) and is ninth in scoring (22.2).
Wright State enters the WBI with a 19-12 overall record and finished fourth in the Horizon League with an 11-7 mark. The 19 wins tie the 2004-05 squad for the most wins for the program since moving up to Division I and only trail the 24-6 mark in 1986-87 for the most ever in school history. The 11 Horizon League wins also tied a program record with 2004-05, when the Raiders were 11-5.
The Women's Basketball Invitational is a 16-team, single elimination tournament, which is broken into two eight-team halves. First round games will take place on Wednesday and Thursday night with the championship game tentatively scheduled for March 26 or 27.
For those unable to attend, the game will air live on 1340 AM WLVL with Nick Mendola on the call.
