BUFFALO, NY - After clinching the sixth seed with an 8-8 record in the Mid American Conference, the Buffalo women's basketball team will welcome in West Division foe Ball State for a first round matchup. It will be the second meeting between the two, with Buffalo winning 77-61 at home on Jan. 29.
The Cardinals have been on a slide since the two teams met in Alumni Arena, losing nine straight games to finish 9-20 overall and 4-12 in the MAC. The offense is led by an imposing inside-outside duo in senior forward Emily Maggert and senior guard Ty'Ronda Benning. Maggert leads the squad, averaging 14.9 points per game, while Benning adds 12.6 points per contest. Maggert also leads the team with 8.5 rebounds per game. Ball State as a team averages 62.3 points per game but allows 68.9.
For Buffalo, this will be the very last home game for the quartet of seniors honored last Saturday: Kourtney Brown, Jessica Fortman, Bridgette Kendricks and Ashley Zuber. Most recently, the team ran in to a hot-shooting Bowling Green team that made 16 three pointers to take down the Bulls, 92-68. Buffalo got another 30-point game from Brown, who became UB's all-time leading basketball scorer, surpassing the men's all-time scorer with her 32-point night. Brown's two blocks also gave her 251 for her career, moving her to first all-time in the Mid-American Conference in career blocks, breaking a mark that has stood for 22 years.
This is the 16th meeting between Ball State and Buffalo, but the first time Ball State has gone to Buffalo for a first round tournament game. The Cardinals lead the all-time series record 10-5 with the last win coming last season at Ball State. Tip off is set for 7 pm, and fans who are unable to make it to the game can tune in to WECK 1230 for Nick Mendola and Scott Wilson's call of the game.
