BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team returned home following a five-game road trip, but 23 turnovers proved to be too much as Duquesne outscored the Bulls 38-26 in the second half en route to a 67-53 road win. Senior Kourtney Brown picked up her 34th career double-double in the game.
The first half saw the lead change hands five times, while also seeing seven ties. The Bulls held their largest lead of the game in the first half at three on a three pointer from freshman Kristen Sharkey with 9:12 left in the opening half. The Dukes didn't lead by more than four in the opening half and a jumper by Bridgette Kendricks with seven seconds left in the half put the Bulls down just two at the intermission.
The second half was a different story as the Dukes extended their lead to nine just seven minutes into the half. They would pick up their first double digit lead with 8:21 to go after the Bulls had gotten the game to within seven. The Bulls brought it to within nine at 5:16 left, but a 7-0 run gave Duquesne its largest lead at 16. A three from Nicki Hopkins and a Brown layup pulled the Bulls within 11, but the Dukes responded with five straight points. A jumper by Brown with 10 seconds left made the final score 67-53.
Brown led the way with 17 points and 16 rebounds, including nine on the offensive end. The double-double was her fifth of the season and the 34th of her career. She also finished with two assists, a block and a steal. Brittany Hedderson had 10 points and five rebounds, while adding two blocks. Kendricks had eight points, while Sharkey finished with seven. Senior Ashley Zuber had five points and three assists.
Duquesne was led by 24 points and nine rebounds from Samantha Pollino. Alex Gensler added 18 points for the Dukes, who improved to 6-1.
The Bulls remain home on Friday when they host St. Bonaventure at Alumni Arena. Tip off is set for 7:00 pm.
