Strong Shooting Leads Ball State Past Bulls, 84-62
MUNCIE, IN – The host Ball State Cardinals started the game on a 13-1 run and never looked back as they defeated the University at Buffalo women's basketball team, 84-62, Wednesday night at Worthen Arena. The game against the Cardinals wraps up play against the MAC West.
The Cardinals shot well from the beginning of the game as they began the contest on a 13-1 run over the first five and a half minutes of the game. The Cardinals had their lead up to as many as 12 in the first half, but the Bulls were able to fight back and get it to within four on a pair of free throws from Kourtney Brown with 1:52 in the half. Five straight points got the BSU lead back to nine and that is the lead it took into the break on a three pointer from Audrey McDonald with three seconds left in the half.
Ball State began the second half on a 12-5 run to get its lead up to 17 just four minutes into the half. The Cardinals shot the ball extremely well in the second half as they converted on five of their final six three-pointers in the half. As a team, Ball State shot 58.3 percent from three and 66.7 percent in the second half.
The Bulls were led by 15 points and five assists from sophomoreBrittany Hedderson. Junior Jessica Fortman added 14 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Brown, who faced double and triple teams throughout the night, finished with nine points, eight rebounds, three blocks, two steals and an assist. In just four minutes of action, freshman Nytor Longar had five points, including a bucket on a nice feed from redshirt junior Meghan George. Sophomore Beth Christensen finished with six points, two assists, a block and a rebound.
Ball State had five players in double figures led by 16 points from Shannon Klei. McDonald and Emily Maggert each had 15 points, while Maggert also had a game-high 10 rebounds. Ty'Raonda Benning and Amber Crago had 12 and 10 points, respectively. McDonald, Benning and Klei had 13 of BSU's 14 three-pointers.
The Bulls return home on Saturday afternoon as they host Akron in the second half of a doubleheader with the UB men's team. Tipoff against the Zips is at 3:00 pm and it is UB's Pink Zone game.
