AUBURN, AL – University at Buffalo junior Brittney Kuras broke her own record in the 200-yard individual medley on the first day of the NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center.
Kuras raced in the third of eight preliminary heats turning in a 1:59.67 clocking. She finished third in the heat and 35th overall among 60 entrants. Her time broke the UB record of 1:59.84 she set when she won the Mid-American Conference title in the event at last month's championships in Akron, OH.
She is UB's first women's swimmer invited for the national competition. Meili Carpenter competed in the diving portion of National Championships in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
"Brittney had a great race today. To swim a best time and break the 200 IM school record again at NCAAs is a great accomplishment," said UB head coach Andy Bashor. "Can't wait for her other swims."
Kuras has two more events to compete in at the meet. On Friday, she will race in the 200-yard freestyle while on Saturday, she is entered in the 100-yard freestyle.
