Relayers Set New Mark as MAC Swim Championships Commence
ATHENS, OH – The University at Buffalo women's swimming and diving team picked up a second-place finish in one relay and a school record in the other relay as the first day of the Mid-American Conference Championships came to a conclusion at the Ohio University Aquatic Center on Wednesday.
In the opening race of the night, the Bulls placed second in the 200-yard medley relay. The UB foursome of Marissa Murphy, Brynn Marecki, Jessie Koltz and Caroline Simmons turned in a clocking of 1:40.30, more than five seconds better than their previous top mark of the season. Miami (OH) finished first in 1:39.68.
UB then set a new school record in the final race of the night, the 800-yard freestyle relay. UB's Logan Mason, Jordan Deren, Alie Schirmers and Tracy Vogel finished sixth among the eight squads in 7:27.67, breaking the old mark of 7:30.39 set at the 2009 MAC Championships. The Bulls also shaved 23 seconds off the previous season-best performance set at Akron's Zippy Invitational in December.
After two events, the Bulls stand third with 60 points, trailing first-Miami (72) and homestanding Ohio (66). Competition continues Thursday through Saturday with preliminary races at 11:00 am with championship finals starting at 7:00 pm.
Team scores: Miami (Ohio) 72, Ohio 66, Buffalo 60, Bowling Green 56, Akron 54, Eastern Michigan 54, Ball State 48, Toledo 40.
