Women's Swimmers Sweep Akron and Ball State
While the men's team had the weekend off, the University at Buffalo's women's swimming and diving team scored two home wins against Mid-American Conference competition. On Friday, the Bulls downed Akron, 169.5-123.5, then followed on Saturday with a 174.5-118.5 win over Ball State for their fifth straight dual meet win of the season. The Bulls are now 6-2 overall (3-1 MAC).
Double Double for Deren
Distance freestyler Jordan Deren won two races on Friday and a pair on Saturday in leading the Bulls to their wins at Alumni Arena Natatorium. Against Akron, she took first place in the 200-yard freestyle, setting a season-best, with her finish of 1:54.17. She also scored a victory in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:08.17. Deren followed that with two more individual wins on Saturday against Ball State. She turned in a season-best time to win the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:32.40 and followed with a win in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:08.12. Deren was also a member of UB's 200-yard freestyle relay team against Akron, which finished first in 1:38.07 as the Bulls exhibitioned the race.
Sprinters Roll to Victories
Sprint freestylers Caroline Simmons and Marissa Murphy were instrumental in UB's two wins. Against Akron, Simmons took the 50-yard freestyle in 23.87 with Murphy claiming the 100-yard freestyle in 53.53. Simmons then won both races on Saturday against Ball State as she claimed first in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.70, the last event of the first session of the meet. After the mandatory break, she won the first event of the second session, the 100-yard freestyle in 52.03. On Saturday, Murphy tied her season-best mark with her victory in the 100-yard butterfly in 57.36. She also swam the fastest 200-yard individual medley as an exhibition entrant with her 2:06.56 clocking, another season-best.
Backstrokers and Butterfliers Win With Ease
Two Bulls set season-best times in their victories on Friday against Akron. Karly Moore won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:07.27, cutting nearly a full second off her previous best while Logan Mason erased more than two seconds from her top time in winning the 100-yard butterfly in 58.83. On Saturday, Kayla Pratt-Collins won both backstroke events, the 100-yard backstroke in 58.75, tying her season-best mark and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:06.68. Brynn Marecki swept the breaststroke races, winning the 100-yard distance in 1:05.63. She then set a season-best mark in the 200-yard race in 2:22.15. Mason won the 200-yard freestyle on Saturday in a season-best 1:54.19, the second fastest time in the event by a Bull this season behind Deren's mark against Akron.
Regular Seasons End With Bonnies Meet
Both the men's and women's squads will conclude their regular seasons this Saturday as the Bulls host regional rival St. Bonaventure at 1:00 pm. The men's team will preceed their meeting with the Bonnies by traveling to Penn State for a dual meet on Friday. The MAC Championships begin on February 23 for the women in Athens, OH while the men's MAC meet starts on March 3 in Carbondale, IL.
