Swimmers Sweep Colgate
The University at Buffalo men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Colgate Saturday afternoon. The UB women (1-1) defeated the Raiders, 152.5-144.5, winning the final relay to secure the victory. In the men's meet, the Bulls (2-0) knocked off the Raiders, 165-104.
Women's Meet Decided on Last Race
Like the UB men in their season-opening win at Pittsburgh on October 15, the UB women pulled the victory over Colgate out in the meet's final event, the 200-yard freestyle. Trailing by one point headed into the race, UB took first and third place to collect 13 points to Colgate's four second-place points. The UB foursome of Marissa Murphy, Karly Moore, Jessie Koltz and Caroline Simmons won the race in 1:35.96. UB's B squad of Alex Swies, Jordan Deren, Logan Mason and Catherine Scharf finished third in 1:39.05.
Schirmers Wins Three
Junior Alie Schirmers won three individual events to lead the Bulls against the Raiders. Schirmers swept the breaststroke races, winning the 100-yard distance in 1:06.24 and the 200-yard race in 2:23.86. She also won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:31.09. Schirmers also combined with Moore, Koltz and Simmons to take the 200-yard medley relay in 1:48.17. Murphy and Simmons won sprint freestyle events. Murphy took the 50-yard freestyle in 24.30 while Simmons claimed the 100-yard freestyle in 52.34. "The women stepped it up when needed to win the close races," said head coach Andy Bashor. "We have been putting in some great work in the pool and weight room so its exciting to see the results."
Double Your Pleasure, Double Your Fun
In the men's meet, the Bulls had four double-winners. Andrew Tanzey won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:48.23 and later won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:13.63. Matt Schwippert claimed the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.30 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:51.82. Cory Zorsch took the 100-yard backstroke in 59.33 and the 100-yard freestyle in 48.19. Josh Meints won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.50 and the 200-yard backstroke in 1:57.62. Phil Aronica won the men's 200-yard butterfly in 1:54.93 while Colin Patrican took the three-meter diving event with 326.18 points. The Bulls also won the 200-yard medley relay with Zorsch, Christian Muller, Aronica and Mike Dugan combining for a time of 1:35.13.
MAC Slate Opens Against RedHawks
The UB women host Miami (OH) next Saturday, October 30, at 1:00 pm at Alumni Arena Natatorium. The UB men travel to Miami (OH) on November 6 for their next competition. "We are excited for the opportunity to race and compete against Miami of Ohio this Saturday," said Bashor. "For years, they have been one of the best in the conference and it's going to be fun to see how we measure up."
