Carpenter and Palma Named to Academic All-MAC Swim Team

CLEVELAND, OH – The Mid-American Conference announced its 2010 Women's Swimming and Diving Academic All-MAC team this morning, with University at Buffalo diver Meili Carpenter and sprint specialist Sam Palma making the team for the Bulls. A total of 32 student-athletes from all eight schools were named to the team.

Carpenter was named to the team for the third time in her career and was one of only three swimmers in the MAC to accomplish the feat. The science education major owns a 3.77 GPA and had a standout senior season with the Bulls. Carpenter swept the boards at the Mid-American Conference Championship meet earning the top spots in both the one and three-meter events, on her way to being named the 2010 Women's MAC Diver of the Year. She also broke her own school record four times in the three-meter dive throughout the season, finishing with a lifetime best and school record score of 350.65 at the MAC Championship meet. Last weekend, Carpenter competed in the NCAA meet for the third time in her career, finishing 11th in the three-meter event, her highest ever placing at the meet, 12th place on the one-meter board and 20th in the platform dive to wrap up an impressive career.

Palma was also a repeat performer, having been named to the team last season as well. Palma has maintained a 3.856 GPA over four years as a history major at UB. She swam the butterfly leg of the fourth-place 400 medley relay team that finished in a season-best time of 3:44.67 at the MAC meet, and was a member of the record-breaking 200 freestyle (1:32.92) and 400 freestyle (3:24.62) relay teams at the MAC Championships. Individually, Palma finished 11th overall in the 100 butterfly in a lifetime-best time of 55.65 at the MAC meet.

The women's team finished their season with a record of 8-3 (4-3 MAC) and tied for fifth place at the MAC Championship meet.

To be nominated for Academic All-MAC honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
