Bulls Edge Akron, 158-140

AKRON, OH – The University at Buffalo women's swimming and diving team edged out MAC rival Akron by a score of 158-140 tonight to improve their record to 6-2 (3-2 MAC).Brynn Marecki picked up two individual wins, while diver Meili Carpenter swept the diving events to help lead the team to their fifth straight win.


The team opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay as Jessica Ballard, Marecki, Sam Palma and Jessie Koltzshaved more than a second off their fastest time of the season, finishing in a time of 3:51.10. Distance freestyler Jordan Deren won the first individual event, taking the 1,000 freestyle in a time of 10:25.21, touching out the Zips competition by less than a second to extend the Buffalo lead. However, two Akron wins closed the gap until Marecki and Alie Schirmers slammed the 100 breaststroke event, taking first and second place with Marecki taking first in a time of 1:05.48 and Schirmers taking second in a time of 1:06.89. Marecki and Schirmers also teamed up for a one-two finish in the 200 breaststroke as Marecki finished first with a time of 2:23.01 and Schirmers finishing close behind in 2:25.23. Caroline Simmons and Koltz combined for another Buffalo one-two finish in the 100 freestyle, as Simmons picked up first-place points with a time of 51.58 and Koltz took second in a time of 52.30. Ballard rounded out the individual wins with a first place finish in the 200 IM, finishing in a season-best time 2:07.42. The 200 freestyle team of Koltz, Palma, Karly Moore and Simmons, capped off the night with a first-place win, taking the event in 1:35.06, just touching out the Akron "A" relay who finished in a time of 1:35.49.

Carpenter kept her one-meter win streak alive as she swept the diving events against Akron. Carpenter won the one-meter event with a score of 313.05, and also took the three-meter event with a score of 331.58. Carpenter was the only diver in either event to break the 300-point mark. 

 

The men's team will host MAC rival Miami tomorrow in a 1:00 pm meet at Alumni Arena Natatorium. Both teams will be back in action next weekend, Friday, January 29, as they travel to Big Four rival St. Bonaventure for a 6:00 pm meet in Olean, NY.
