BINGHAMTON, NY – The University at Buffalo men's and women's swimming and diving team picked up another road win with a clean sweep of Binghamton this afternoon, as the women's team defeated the Bearcats 134-105, while the men's team won by a score of 137-103. The women's team moves to 5-2 (2-2 MAC), with the men's team holding a record of 4-1 (1-1 MAC).
On the men's side, the 400 medley relay of Zach Ruske, Josh Meints, Cory Zorsch andMatt Hogan took first place with a time of 3:30.00. Distance specialist Connor Vander Zalmwon the 1,000 freestyle (9:49.60), as well as the 500 freestyle (4:46.62). Vander Zalm touched out the Bearcats competition in the 500 freestyle by a hundreth of a second to take the win. Other first-place finishes came from Meints in the 200 IM (1:58.58), Zorsch in the 200 butterfly (1:58.75), Jared Heine in the 100 freestyle (47.66) and Matt Schwippert in the 200 backstroke (1:53.39).The women's team opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay as Jessica Ballard, Brynn Marecki, Sam Eckert andJessie Koltz touched out Binghamton by less than a tenth of a second to finish in a time of 3:57.74, setting the precedence for the remainder of the meet. Alisa Koopman won the first individual event on the women's side, picking up first-place points in the 1,000 freestyle (10:50.33). Jordan Deren was a double winner, taking the 200 freestyle (1:55.89) as well as the 500 freestyle (5:08.90). Koltz and freshmanCaroline Simmons tied in the 50 freestyle event, both finishing in a time of 24.22. Freshman Dani Adank also picked up a win for the Bulls, winning the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:08.92.
"I was pleased with how we swam. I saw a lot of good things today, especially with travelling and just coming off the Niagara meet," said head coach Andy Bashor. "We raced well, but now we have to focus on next weekend. We have a big weekend coming up and we need to prepare for that."
Both teams will be back in action this weekend, with the women's team traveling to Akron for a conference meet against the Zips on Friday, January 22 at 5:00 pm. The men's team will host Miami in a 1:00 pm meet on Saturday, January 23 at Alumni Arena Natatorium.
