Bulls Continue Play In San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CA - The University at Buffalo softball team continued action at the San Diego Classic II on Saturday, falling 8-3 to UNLV in the afternoon and then dropping an 8-0 decision to Texas Tech in the night cap.
UNLV opened the first game by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, but Buffalo was able to respond and take the lead in the bottom half of the inning, sending nine batters to the plate. Junior Sammi Gallardo led off the inning with a double and was driven home on a single up the middle from Alyssa Ward. Then with two runners on base, senior Jessica Griffin doubled to right field, driving in two runs and giving UB the lead.
UB was unable to hold on to that lead though as UNLV scored three runs in the top of the second and another three runs in the top of the fourth. The Bulls had chances, but left two runners on base in the third inning and left the bases loaded in the fourth. Buffalo also left two runners on base in the fifth and the seventh. Griffin went 3-for-4 in the game.
UB hung tough early on in the second game against Texas Tech, who improved to 24-8 on the year. Neither team was able to score over the first two innings, but Texas Tech finally came through with three in the bottom of the third.
Buffalo threatened in the top of the fifth as it had the bases loaded with just one out, but a line out and fly out ended the threat. The Red Raiders responded by scoring five in the bottom of the fifth, which ended the game.
Buffalo had four hits in the game coming from four different players. Freshman Dani Cowan picked up the loss as she went 4.1 innings, striking out five, but allowing six runs.
The Bulls conclude play in San Diego tomorrow when they face UT-Arlington at 2:30 pm Eastern Time.
