Bulls Drop A Pair At Sam Houston St.
HUNTSVILLE, TX - The University at Buffalo softball team ended its 10-day layoff on Wednesday evening with a pair of games against Sam Houston St., however the host Bearkats took both ends of the doubleheader.
Sam Houston State used a three-run fifth inning in the opener as it came away with a 5-1 victory. The Bulls got on the board first in the top of the second inning as sophomore Sammi Gallardo led off the inning with a double. After getting moved over to third on a sacrifice, she was driven in on a double from junior Andi Saucier.
The Bearkats added two runs in the bottom half of the inning against Buffalo starter Holly Johnson, who picked up the loss. The Bulls managed just five hits in the opener.
In the nightcap, the Bulls scored one run in the top of the first inning, but Sam Houston State responded with six unanswered runs to take a 6-1 lead. The Bulls came back with two runs in the top of the fifth as junior Alyssa Ward singled to knock in Rebecca Griswold and Jessica Griffin, who led off the inning with back-to-back singles.
The Bearkats added another run in the fifth inning and Buffalo scored one in the seventh as Tori Pettine hit a one-out triple to drive in Griffin. Griffin and Pettine each went 2-for-3 from the plate as Griffin scored two runs. Sophomore Tori Speckman picked up the loss as she pitched 5.0 innings.
The Bulls will be off tomorrow and will then head to Waco, TX to face Baylor and Liberty on Friday.
