Bulls Go 1-1 During Second Day In Jacksonville
JACKSONVILLE, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team split a pair of games on Saturday, winning the opener 6-3 over UNC Greensboro and then falling 6-0 to Virginia Tech.
The Bulls were able to overcome a one-run deficit in the opening game against UNC Greensboro thanks to a three-run inning in the bottom of the fourth. UB took an early lead in the contest, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. UB used an early double from sophomore Holly Luciano, which scored Kristin Waldron. Luciano came in to score on the next play as junior transfer Caitlin Dekker singled to right field.
The Bulls continued to lead by two until the top of the fourth when UNC Greensboro hit a three-run home run to take the lead and knock out Buffalo starter Tori Speckman. Senior Holly Johnson came in and pitched four innings of scoreless relief.
The Bulls began the fourth inning with a single up the middle from junior Alyssa Ward. She remained at first base as the Bulls began to rally with two outs. Sophomore Tori Pettine hit an infield single which moved Ward to second and she would come in to score on the next at bat as freshman Karly Nevez reached on an error. After stealing second, Pettine and Nevez were both knocked in on a single to right center from freshman Alexis Curtiss.
The Bulls added another run in the bottom of the sixth as Pettine began the inning with a singles up the middle. After stealing second, she was driven in on the third run batted in from Curtiss. Johnson was able to work out of trouble in the seventh to pick up her first win of the year. Pettine went two for three in the opener scoring a pair of runs, while Curtiss went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in. Luciano also had a multiple hit game in the win.
Virginia Tech used the momentum of a three-run third inning as they defeated the Bulls in the second game. The Hokies also scored runs in the first, second and sixth innings. The Bulls managed just three hits in the contest, two coming from Gallardo. Speckman picked up her first loss of the season as she allowed five runs in 3.0 innings, just two of those were earned. Senior Haylee Land came in to pitch the final 3.0 innings, allowing just one run.
UB will conclude play in Jacksonville tomorrow morning as they face St. Louis at 9:00 am. The Bulls defeated St. Louis yesterday in the season opener.
