Bulls Drop Sunday Matinee To Akron, 6-0
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo softball team was blanked 6-0 by Akron on Sunday afternoon as the two teams finished with a split of the weekend series at Nan Harvey Field. Prior to the game, UB honored its five seniors who were playing in their last home game.
For the second straight day the Zips got on the board in the top of the first, scoring two runs on a single. However, the Zips would not get anymore as the inning ended with junior Kristin Waldron throwing a perfect strike to second to catch the Akron runner stealing.
Akron starter Alex Riedeman retired the first six UB batters before freshman Sammi Gallardo began the third with a double to right field. Gallardo advanced as far as third base in the inning, but could not be driven home. The Zips doubled their lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning on a pair of run-scoring singles. Akron would score another two with single runs in the sixth and seventh. The Zips had the bases loaded with nobody out in the seventh, but junior Haylee Land came on in relief and allowed just one of those runs to score.
Freshman Tori Speckman picked up the loss as she pitched 6.0 innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out two. Riedeman got the win for Akron as she pitched the four-hit complete game shutout. The Bulls had four different players record hits, including Waldron, Alexandra Bejarano, Gallardo and Andi Saucier. The hit for Waldron extends a five-game hitting streak and she had now recorded a hit in 14 of the last 15 games.
The Bulls will conclude the regular season next weekend as they head to Eastern Michigan for a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1:00 pm. UB will have single games at Central Michigan on Saturday and Sunday.
