TAMPA, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday afternoon at the USF - The Game Tournament, including one to #22 Texas A&M. UB fell 8-0 to the Aggies and then lost 9-1 to the host, South Florida. Both games went six innings.
UB got some strong pitching early on against the 22nd-ranked team in the country as Texas A&M scored just one run over the first four innings, which came on a leadoff home run in the second. However, the Aggies erupted for four runs in the fourth and three more in the sixth for the final margin of victory.
The Bulls managed just one hit in the game, that being a leadoff double by freshman Tori Pettine to start the third inning. The Bulls looked to have something going as fellow freshman Kelli Gleiser reached on an error, moving Pettine to third. The Bulls would ultimately have runners at second and third with just one out, but were unable to cross the plate. UB would not be able to produce anything else as the last 12 batters were retired in a row.
In the second game, South Florida used a five-run sixth inning for the 9-1 victory. USF scored runs in the first and third to take a 2-0 lead, but Buffalo would pull within one in the top of the fourth. Jessica Griffin led off the inning with a walk and was replaced by Holly Luciano as a pinch runner. Luciano would come in to score on a double to center field by Andi Saucier. The Bulls loaded the bases in the inning with just one out, but were unable to score any more runs.
South Florida scored two more runs in the bottom of the fourth before the five in the sixth. Tori Speckman pitched just two-thirds of an inning, but picked up the loss as she gave up an unearned run in the first. Kate Kraus came in and allowed five runs in 2.1 innings pitched and Land would pitch the final 2.2 innings, allowing three runs, just one of those earned.
The Bulls will play two more games tomorrow at the USF - The Game Tournament. UB faces Liberty tomorrow at 3:00 pm and Florida Atlantic at 5:30 pm.
