JACKSONVILLE, FL – The University at Buffalo softball team began its 2011 season on Friday, dropping a pair of contests at the Jacksonville Invitational.  The Bulls got solid contributions from their newcomers despite the defeats.

In the first game the Bulls were unable to overcome a seven-run first inning as they fell to Kansas, 13-3.  UB did register five hits in the game, scoring in two innings.

The Bulls picked up two in the second as senior Alexandra Bejarano walked to lead off the inning and then advanced to second on a passed ball.  Sophomore Andi Saucier also walked and then both moved up a base on a wild pitch with one out.  UB would load the bases as freshman Holly Luciano worked a walk and then it would pick up its first run of the game on a wild pitch, scoring Bejarano.  The Bulls reloaded the bases as Ashley Bertot got on base and then freshman Sammi Gallardo picked up her first collegiate RBI with an infield single.  Unfortunately for the Bulls two strike outs would ultimately end the inning.

UB did pick up another run in the second inning as the Bulls again loaded the bases with one out.  Bejarano picked up her second run scored as she crossed the place on a fielder's choice.

Junior Holly Johnson picked up the loss as she struggled in her first game.  Fellow junior Haylee Land pitched five innings, striking out two.  Freshman Tori Pettine went 2-for-3 from the plate in the opener.

In the second game of the day against the host Dolphins both teams could not find the scoring column for the first five innings.  Jacksonville scored the first two runs in the top of the sixth before the Bulls cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom half of the inning.

Luciano kicked off the inning by getting all the way to third on an error by the left fielder.  She would come in to score on a sacrafice fly from Gallardo, her second run batted in on the day.  The Dolphins scored another run in the seventh, holding on to win, 3-1.

Johnson pitched the complete game, picking up the loss, but striking out six batters.  Junior Kristin Waldron went 2-for-3 from the plate in the contest.

The Bulls are back in action for two more games tomorrow beginning with Bethune-Cookman at 9:30 am and then followed up by a game with North Carolina at 11:45 am.
