BUFFALO, NY – Sophomore Kristin Waldron drove in all four runs as the University at Buffalo softball team won 4-3 in nine innings to defeat Bowling Green and split today's doubleheader. In the opening game, the Falcons defeated UB, 5-3. The Bulls are now 19-32 on the season and 7-13 in MAC play.
In the opener, both teams pitched well, but the Falcons were able to overcome a 3-2 deficit with a three-run home run in the top of the fifth. Following a 1-0 BG advantage, the Bulls took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second as Alyssa Ward began the inning with a triple down the right field line. Ward would come on to score as she beat the throw from the pitcher on a bunt from Sharon Barr. Barr would eventually come around to score on a Bowling Green error.
In the nightcap, UB was able to overcome a 2-0 first inning deficit, tying the game up in the bottom of the third. Ashley Bertot hit a one-out single and stole second. She advanced to third on a bunt single from Franich. Franich stole second and both her and Bertot came in to score on the first two of four RBIs from Waldron, who doubled to left center. The Bulls took the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Waldron drove in Bertot, who had singled and advanced to third on an error. Waldron drove in the run on a groundout to the shortstop.
Neither team was able to score, until the Falcons staged a two-out rally in the top of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. UB would walk off with the win in the bottom of the ninth, staging a two-out rally of its own. Bertot reached first on a bunt single and stole second. She advanced to third on an infield single by Franich, who also went on to steal second base. Waldron then knocked home Bertot as she singled up the middle, delivering the Bulls with the win.
