After spending three seasons playing for the University at Buffalo men’s tennis team, George Tibil was named the squad’s assistant coach in September of 2012.

Tibil, a former team captain for head coach Lee Nickell with the Bulls from 2009-12, compiled a 50-36 combined singles and doubles record in his three seasons at Buffalo. In 2010, he was named UB’s Most Valuable Player finishing 17-9 in singles play and 16-13 in doubles competitions. His 4-0 singles mark against Mid-American Conference opponents helped propel the Bulls to their first league regular season title. He also represented UB at the prestigious ITA Regional championships.

A native of Bucharest, Romania, Tibil also brings a strong international background to his coaching duties. A winner of five national tournaments in Belgium, Tibil also scored a three-set victory over Tom Vanhoudt, ranked 36th in the ATP rankings. He was also among the top four junior players in Romania.

“George Tibil is a great example of what it means to be a Buffalo Bull,” said Nickell. “After a stellar freshman year, he had two catastrophic injuries his sophomore and junior years which prohibited him from competing. Instead of throwing in the towel, he came every day to practice helping coach the guys as well as became a fixture in the athletic department. He has many years of coaching experience and his recruiting contacts are all over the world. He is the right guy for the job, and he will help the Bulls men’s tennis program continue to rewrite the record books.”
