NEW HAVEN, CT – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team sent four singles players and two doubles tandems to the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships which concluded Sunday. The Bulls advanced one doubles combo through to the fourth round before bowing out of play.
The doubles team of Marcelo Mazzetto and Mitch Zenaty won three matches to advance to the fourth round. The duo downed Matt Wierzel and Ryan Sullivan of Holy Cross, 8-2, in their opening match. Mazzetto and Zenaty then defeated Monmouth's Laurence Heads and Ian Terpilowski, 8-5, in the second round. On Sunday, Mazzetto and Zenaty knocked off seventh-seeded Daniel Hoffman and Marc Powers of Yale in a close 9-8 decision. UB's run ended with a fourth-round loss to Harvard's Jonathan Pearlman and Christo Schultz, 8-1.
The doubles team of Wojciech Starakiewicz and George Tibil scored a first-round win over Princeton's Yohei Shoji and Alex Faust, 8-3. Starakiewicz and Tibil were eliminated in the second round by Harvard's Alistair Felton and Andy Nguyen, the draw's second seed, 8-4.
In singles play, Mazzetto won his first round match against Boston College's Jonathan Schroeder, 7-5, 6-3. He fell in second round play to Penn's Matt Spindler, 6-1, 6-3. Starakiewicz earned the singles tournament's fourth seed and a first-round bye but was upset in his first match of the tournament in three sets by Princeton's Dan Richardson, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. George Tibil fell in his first-round match to Dartmouth's Xander Centenari, 1-6, 7-6, 6-1. Vusa Hove suffered his first singles loss of the season in his opening round match to Mike Hill of Brown, 6-4, 7-5. Hove then rallied for two wins in the consolation bracket defeating James Kwei of Quinnipiac, 7-5, 7-5 and Seton Hall's Kirill Kasyanov in a super-tiebreaker, 6 -3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8). Zenaty played in the consolation rounds defeating Army's Tripp Johnson, 6-2, 6-3, before falling to Seton Hall's Chris Ujkic, 6-3, 6-4.
The Bulls conclude the fall season with the Cornell Wicked Invitational starting on October 29.
