Mens and Womens Tennis Finish In ITA Regional Rankings
BUFFALO, NY – Both the University at
Buffalo men's and women's tennis teams can be found in the latest
regional rankings and both teams placed players in both the singles
and doubles rankings, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association
announced on Monday. The men finished ranked ninth in the
Northeast, while the women finished ranked 10th in the region.
The UB men, who won its first ever Mid-American Conference
regular season title this past season, finished with a 13-7 record,
including a perfect 5-0 mark. The Bulls made their first ever
appearance in the MAC Championship and had a streak where they won
eight of nine matches.
Sophomore
Wojciech
Starakiewicz, a first-team All-MAC selection, finished the
season ranked seventh in the Northeast in singles, the highest ever
ranking for a UB player. Starakiewicz finished the year with a 16-7
mark in singles, including an 11-6 mark at first singles. He was
also ranked in doubles with
Kirill
Kolomyts as the duo went 9-1 this past season when playing
together to claim the eighth spot in the regional
rankings.
On the women's side, UB completed the season with a 9-9 record,
falling in a close match to eventual MAC Champion Miami in the MAC
Semifinals. UB started its season with three straight victories,
including wins over St. John's and Cornell.
Individually, senior
Denise
Harijanto is ranked as the 16th best singles player in the
Northeast as she finished the season with a 17-14 record, including
a 10-6 mark at first singles. Harijanto finished her UB career
second all-time in singles victories at UB. Harijanto was also
ranked in doubles as her and partner
Aleksandra
Petrova picked up the ninth ranking in the Northeast
polls. Harijanto and Petrova finished the year at 16-5 with a 13-5
mark at first singles.
The Northeast Region is one of 12 regions that the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranks. The Bulls are the only
school in the Mid-American Conference to be listed in the
Northeast.
