Bulls Drop Heartbreaker to Broncos

The University at Buffalo men's soccer team suffered its first conference loss of the season as Western Michigan scored the deciding goal with 38 seconds left in regulation for a 2-1 decision over the Bulls. UB falls to 7-6-1 overall and 2-1-0 in Mid-American Conference play with the loss. Three matches, two at home at UB Stadium, remain on the regular season schedule for the Bulls.

Fedler Has The Hot Foot

Lukas Fedler scored UB's lone goal of the match against Western Michigan. The freshman defender scored three minutes into the second half on a header following a free kick that Matthew Chereson sailed from 40-yards. The goal was Fedler's third of the season, scoring the three markers in the last five matches. Fedler scored his first career goal in UB's 2-1 overtime win over Niagara. He scored the golden goal in the Bulls' 2-1 overtime win over No. 18 Northern Illinois.

Making the Save

Junior goalkeeper Jonathan Viscosi tied his career high with eight saves in the match as the Bulls' team was also credited with two saves for a total of 10 saves in the match. Viscosi also had eight saves in his first two games of the season against St. Bonaventure and Robert Morris. For the season, the first-year player has made 69 saves, tying him for 20th on UB's single season list with Justin Deming who stopped 69 shots in 1999. Viscosi's 1.21 goals against average currently stands 14th on the single-season list. The Bulls lead the Mid-American Conference with 80 saves (5.71 per match) this season.

Collecting the Cards

The Bulls were assessed five yellow cards in Saturday's match, tying a season-high, which included one on the UB bench. It was the third straight match that the UB bench had been given a yellow card for protesting calls. The Bulls lead the Mid-American Conference with 33 yellow cards this season (2.35 per match).

Scouting the Zips

UB hosts defending MAC and National Champion Akron on Friday, October 21 at UB Stadium beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Zips defeated Hartwick, 2-0, on Saturday giving head coach Caleb Porter his 100th victory at Akron. The Zips are 10-1-2, having lost only to 19th-ranked UC Santa Barbara, 3-2 in overtime, and securing ties against Cal State-Fullerton and 16th-ranked New Mexico. Akron has won its last three matches, all by shutout and have allowed just six goals this season. Darren Mattocks, last year's MAC Newcomer of the Year, leads the team with 12 goals and 25 points while Scott Caldwell and Aodhan Quinn each have seven assists. Mattocks leads the MAC in shots and goals this season. Goalkeeper David Meves has shut out nine opponents this season and holds a MAC best 0.44 goals against average.
