Goalless in Colorado
It was a rough week in Colorado for the University at Buffalo men's soccer team as they dropped weekend matches at Denver, 3-0, and Air Force, 6-1. The Bulls have dropped three straight and are now 4-3-1.
Tiedt Increases Team Scoring Lead
The lone goal scored by the Bulls on the weekend trip came in Sunday's match at Air Force. Andy Tiedt connected on his fourth goal of the season and increased his scoring lead with his ninth point. Tiedt took Patrick Ryan's pass from the corner and netted the goal from 18 yards at 63:43. It was the first goal for UB in 177 minutes since Joey Merlo connected in the second half at Albany in the 2-1 overtime loss to the Great Danes on September 11.
Aubrey Sees Some Playing Time
After Air Force scored three early goals against UB starter Jonathan Viscosi, sophomore Ryan Aubrey got his first action of the season in relief to open the second half. Aubrey made three saves in his 45 minutes of action. As a freshman backup in 2010, Aubrey had a 0.94 goals against average in six matches and scored two shutouts.
Scouting the Golden Griffins
UB returns home to open a two-match string against Western New York opponents. The Bulls host Canisius on Wednesday, September 21 at 7:30 pm and Niagara on Friday, September 23 at 5:00 pm. Canisius comes into Wednesday's match with a 1-5-0 record scoring the first victory of the season last Friday with a 2-1 win over St. Bonaventure. Gavin Falconer and Sam Zarka scored second half goals one minute apart as the match was stopped in the 71st minute after St. Bonaventure's coaching staff were carded out of the game. The win was the Griffs' first-ever win in Olean and the program's first victory against the Bonnies since 2006. Canisius has scored just four goals in their six matches with Jared Ott and Will Hudson netting markers in the losses to Syracuse and San Diego State, respectively. The Bulls hold a 26-8-5 edge on the Golden Griffins, scoring 100 goals in the 39 matches. UB downed Canisius, 1-0, in last season's meeting at the Demske Complex on Ian Storan's goal. The Bulls have a 2-0-1 mark vs. Canisius in their last three meetings.
Scouting the Purple Eagles
The Bulls lead the all-time series with Niagara 21-13-5, although UB dropped a 3-2 match to the Purple Eagles on the road last season, the first loss by the Bulls in the series since 2004. Mike Unwin and Juha Kaartoluoma netted the markers for the Bulls. This season, Niagara is 5-1-1 after a weekend sweep of Green Bay and Eastern Illinois at a tournament in Wisconsin. The Purple Eagles have shut out their last three opponents. Carl Haworth leads the team with six goals. Brett Petricek holds a 0.69 goals against average and averages 5.4 saves per game.
