LOUDONVILLE, NY – The University at Buffalo men's soccer team remained unbeaten on the 2011 campaign with a 2-1 victory at Siena on Friday afternoon.
The Bulls (4-0-1) opened the scoring in the 30th minute as freshman Vinny DiVirgilio connected on his first collegiate goal. DiVirgilio moved left to right across the box and fired the shot past Siena goalkeeper Jack Binks to give the Bulls the 1-0 edge. Patrick Ryan and Risto Latti were credited with assists on the goal.
In the second half, UB took a 2-0 lead when senior Andy Tiedt netted his team-best third goal of the season. Tiedt, who now leads the Bulls with three goals and seven points, took Latti's corner kick and headed the ball into the far side of the net in the 51st minute.
Siena (2-3-0) broke UB's 289 consecutive minute scoreless streak in the 57th minute as Joe Miner tipped in a pass behind UB goalkeeper Jonathan Viscosi. It was just the second goal allowed by the UB defense in 2011. Viscosi stopped three Siena shots for his fourth win of the season.
The Bulls were outshot by their hosts, 14-9, although both teams had four shots on goal. UB had a 5-4 edge on corner kicks. The Bulls played the entire second half with 10 players after freshman Garfield Williams was ejected on a red card violation.
"It was a great win and a total team effort," said interim head coach David Hesch. "We played everything right and played a disciplined game."
Hesch also noted the contributions of several of his players in Friday's match. "Jon Viscosi and the back four continue to be steady and Andy Tiedt is on a roll." Tiedt scored his third game-winner of the year and has now scored in two straight contests.
DiVirgilio earned his first career start on Friday and responded with the opening goal. "Vinny DiVirgilio scored a world class goal. He's been playing for me and [assistant coach] Jimmy [Hesch] at Black Watch Premier for five years and I had total confidence in him."
The Bulls remain in the Capital District for the weekend. UB will face the University at Albany on Sunday afternoon. Due to heavy rains at Albany's soccer complex, the match will be played on the campus of the College of St. Rose starting at 3:00 pm.
