BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo men's soccer player Mike Unwin has been named the Mid-American Conference's co-Player of the Week, the league announced the award from its Cleveland headquarters late Tuesday. The senior shared the award with Western Michigan freshman Derek Schrauben.
Unwin, a senior forward, scored the game-winning goal against Florida Atlantic on Sunday, October 31 as the Bulls clinched a spot in the Mid-American Conference playoffs. Unwin missed the Detroit match on Tuesday, October 26 due to an accumulation of yellow cards but returned to the pitch with a strong match against FAU. He tallied his team-best fifth goal of the season with 12 minutes left in the first half as he redirected Casey Derkacz's throw in past FAU goalkeeper James McCormick. Unwin had 11 of UB's 18 shots in the contest and leads the Bulls in scoring with five goals and three assists for 13 points.
The Bulls (7-8-1, 3-2-0 MAC) host Western Michigan (8-7-2, 3-2-0 MAC) in a pivotal match on Friday, November 5 at UB Stadium at 7:30 p.m. The Bulls and Broncos are tied for second place in the league as they head into Friday's finale.
