Bulls Boot Owls, 1-0
BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's soccer team scored a 1-0 victory over Mid-American Conference rival Florida Atlantic on Sunday afternoon at UB Stadium to assure a spot in the upcoming MAC Tournament.
The Bulls (7-8-1, 3-2-0 MAC) dictated play throughout the match with most of the action on its half of the field. UB broke onto the scoreboard as Mike Unwin redirected Casey Derkacz's throw in with 12 minutes left in the first half. It was the fifth goal of the season for Unwin, who missed Tuesday's contest against Detroit because of an accumulation of yellow cards. Unwin leads the Bulls in scoring with his five goals and 13 points.
UB made the most of the advantage in the second half by preventing the Owls (5-7-2, 2-3-0 MAC) from tying the contest. FAU had a chance to send the match into overtime as they were awarded a free kick 25 yards from the goal with three seconds left. The free kick was blocked by the UB wall as time expired.
Senior goalkeeper Nick Fetterman made three of his four saves in the final 45 minutes to preserve the shutout, his second of the season and sixth of his career. The Bulls have shutout four opponents this season.
Both teams played a man down for the final 25 minutes as UB's Sam Craven and FAU's Dominic Cutrofello were issued red cards for dangerous play.
The Bulls outshot the Owls, 18-12, holding a 12-4 edge in the first half.
The win moves the Bulls into a second-place tie with Western Michigan as the top four squads will play in the MAC Tournament. The Bulls host the Broncos on Friday, November 5 at 7:30 pm in the regular season finale.
