Bulls Even MAC Mark With Win Over Huskies

  The University at Buffalo men's soccer team knocked off Mid-American Conference rival Northern Illinois, 3-2, Friday night at UB Stadium to remain unbeaten at home this season. The Bulls are 6-7-1 overall and 2-2-0 in MAC play. UB is also 3-0-1 when playing on home turf. 

Rogers Enjoys Big Night

Sophomore defender Kyle Rogers scored his first two goals of the season and his career as the Bulls defeated the Huskies. Rogers, inserted into the lineup late in the first half, scored the eventual game-winner from in front of the NIU goal in the 40th minute to give the Bulls a 2-1 halftime edge. Senior midfielder Rich Wilson picked up the assist on the play. Rogers added another goal in the 56th minute for a 3-1 advantage. Casey Derkacz sent a corner kick in front of the goal which was played by Andy Tiedt. Tiedt's pass to Rogers was on the mark as Rogers picked up his second marker of the match.

Titans, Owls Make Visits to Buffalo

The Bulls are 3-0-1 at UB Stadium with three contests remaining on the regular season schedule, all at home. UB hosts Detroit in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, October 26 at 7:30 pm. The Bulls return to MAC play for their final two contests of the regular season against Florida Atlantic on October 31 at 1:00 pm and Western Michigan on November 5 at 7:30 p.m.

Astudillo's Assessment

Following the victory over Northern Illinois, head coach John Astudillo commented on his team's play. "The game was a back and forth match that required solid defense and an ability to offensively counter with numbers," said Astudillo. "Buffalo played excellent defense especially in set plays, as this is a specialty of NIU. In spite of the effort all five goals were the result of set plays. Buffalo took advantage of its chances and scored three goals. It is also key that a player like Kyle Rogers would add to the effort with two goals." With two home matches on the slate this week, Astudillo said, "As we look forward to Detroit and FAU, we will prepare to take on these two teams that are coming in with winning hot streaks. Detroit's offense will pose some problems and we will have to defuse a hot Ya Ya Toure, the Horizon Player of the Week. FAU's offense is more widespread and we will have to deal with multiple scorers. However in both matches, Buffalo has to attack and attack often."
