Bulls Tame Huskies, 3-2

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's soccer knocked team off Mid-American Conference rival Northern Illinois, 3-2, Friday night at UB Stadium to remain unbeaten at home this season as sophomore defender Kyle Rogers scored the first two goals of the season.

The Bulls (6-7-1, 2-2-0 MAC) fell behind early as Northern Illinois (6-6-2, 0-4-0 MAC) netted the first goal in the 10th minute as Finn Jor headed the ball past UB freshman goalkeeper Ryan Aubrey following a free kick.

Mike Unwin tied the match for the Bulls in the 22nd minute with his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Unwin took a throw in from Anthony Johnson in front of the goal and sent the ball past NIU goalkeeper Jordan Godsey to tie the match.

Rogers, inserted into the lineup late in the first half, scored the eventual game-winner from in front of the NIU goal in the 40th minute to give the Bulls a 2-1 halftime edge. It was Rogers' first goal of his career for the Bulls as senior midfielder Rich Wilson picked up the assist.

Rogers added to the UB lead in the 56th minute for a 3-1 advantage. Casey Derkacz sent a corner kick in front of the goal which was played by Andy Tiedt. Tiedt's pass to Rogers was on the mark as Rogers picked up the goal.

NIU scored late to narrow the gap as Francis Otira scored on a rebound after Engebreth Faerden's shot hit the post with nine minutes left in the match. NIU played a man down for the final four minutes after Mino Kayser drew a red card. The Huskies had a chance to tie the match in the final minute but Tim King's shot from the right side of the net went wide.

Aubrey remained undefeated in goal, stopping six Huskie shot while Godsey collected five saves. NIU held a 21-15 advantage in shots for the contest.

The Bulls are 3-0-1 at UB Stadium with three contests remaining on the regular season schedule, all at home. UB hosts Detroit in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, October 26 at 7:30 pm.
