Bulls Drop Heartbreaker to Niagara, 3-2
NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – After leading at halftime, the University at Buffalo men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision at Niagara Friday night as two second half goals by the Purple Eagles proved to be the margin.
The Bulls (4-5) jumped out early as Mike Unwin scored his second goal of the season in the 19th minute with a long shot that slipped past the left side of Niagara goalkeeper Christopher Skelton for the 1-0 UB lead.
Niagara (2-6-1) quickly tied the match two minutes later as Michael Malone scored on an indirect free kick.
UB regained the lead just before halftime. Senior forward Juha Kaartoluoma, inserted into the lineup as a substitute in the 40th minute, scored his second goal off the season to tie for the team lead. Kaartoluoma followed up Unwin's blocked attempt to give the Bulls a 2-1 edge with 1:45 remaining in the first half.
Carl Haworth scored both of Niagara's second half goals in the 57th and 75th minutes. The game clincher was scored as Haworth headed the ball to the left of UB goalkeeper Nick Fetterman. Fetterman collected three saves, all in the first half.
Niagara outshot the Bulls, 13-12, however UB won the corner kick battle, 6-2. Unwin had four of UB's shots while Andy Tiedt had three.
