BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo men's soccer team notched its third consecutive win on Tuesday night with a 2-1 victory over local rival St. Bonaventure at UB Stadium. Andy Tiedt netted the game winner in the 64th minute to lift the Bulls (3-2) to the win over the Bonnies (2-3).
Tiedt, a junior forward, took over the team lead in scoring with his second goal of the season. He centered a pass from junior forward Mike Unwin about five yards in front of the net and sent the shot past a diving David Flynn to break the 1-1 tie.
The Bulls needed to rally from an early deficit as St. Bonaventure scored the opening goal. SBU's Fabrizio Savarino put a slow dribbler past UB keeper Jeremy Figler, who was making his first career start, into the lower right corner of the net to give the Bonnies a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. Brett Allen was credited with the assist for the Bonnies.
UB immediately tied the match at 1-1 in the 13th minute when senior defender Casey Derkacz fired a rocket from 25 yards away as the shot sailed over Flynn and into the net. Junior defender Tom Beckvermit recorded his first assist of the season on the play.
The Bulls outshot the Bonnies 19-14 on the evening although St. Bonaventure had a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Figler stopped four St. Bonaventure shots to collect his first win of the season. It was the freshman's second appearance in goal for Bulls after relieving Nick Fetterman for the final 13 minutes of the season opener against Penn State.
Flynn collected eight saves for the Bonnies.
The Bulls travel to Albuquerque, NM for the Lobo Classic this weekend. They face the host Lobos on Friday night at 9:00 pm (ET). UB then faces UC Santa Barbara, ranked ninth in the country last weekend, in Sunday's finale at 1:00 pm (ET).
