Bulls Fall Short to St. Bonaventure 2-1

OLEAN, NY – The University at Buffalo men's soccer team fell short to St. Bonavneture, 2-1 in their first Big Four contest of the season. In the 78th minute, Steffen Thoresen buried a shot from 30 yards out to score the Bulls' tally for his first goal of the season.

The Bonnies took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute off a corner kick opportunity. Forward Fabrizio Savarino capitalized on the opportunity with the Bonnies' Tyler Bellamy and Brett Allen picking up assists.

In the opening minute of the second half, the Bonnies struck quick off a breakaway. Finding himself alone versus the Bulls' goalkeeper Nick Fetterman, Sam Maheu converted on a shot from 30 yards out to give the Bonnies a 2-0 lead to start the second half.

Off a continuous strong attack, the senior connection of Thoresen and Alex Marrello cut the Bonnies lead to 2-1 in the 78th minute off a corner kick. Marrello served a perfect ball to Thoresen, who buried the 30-yard shot inside the far post away from the Bonnies' goalkeeper David Flynn.

"This was a disheartening loss due to the spirited effort our men gave today. We played a very strong contest, aggressively defending and attacking," said head coach John Astudillo.

The Bulls held an 8-7 shot advantage as Mike Unwin led the Bulls with three shots.

"In such a close contest, we needed to finish the chances that presented themselves and we were unable to. The effort though was surely there," added Astudillo.

The Bulls (4-5, 0-1 MAC) will return home to face another Big Four rival as they host Niagara on Friday, October 2 at 7:30 pm.
