Bulls Host Cardinals in Pivotal Mid-Week Matchup

BUFFALO, NY - The UB men's basketball team will have redemption on its mind Wednesday evening as it welcomes in the Ball State Cardinals for a 7 pm tipoff. The Bulls are coming off a tight 72-71 loss last season in Muncie, but comes into the game riding a four-game win streak in the Mid-American Conference and two wins over MAC West schools. Buffalo is riding a five-game home winning streak and has an 8-1 overall record in the friendly confines of Alumni Arena.

This will be the 21st meeting between the two schools, with Ball State holding a 13-7 advantage. Ball State has won the previous six meetings in the regular season. However, the Bulls defeated the Cardinals in the 2006 and 2009 MAC Tournament. Last season, Buffalo lost 72-71 on the road as Byron Mulkey's three pointer missed at the buzzer.

In its last game out, Buffalo earned its second conference road win of the season with a 74-59 win over Northern Illinois. Javon McCrea posted a double double of 14 points and 12 rebounds in just 19 minutes as the team cruised over the Huskies. Mitchell Watt and Zach Filzen also scored in double figures, and every active player on the roster played at least two minutes.

The Cardinals own a share of second place with a 4-3 record in the MAC and has a 12-7 overall record. The team is led by All-MAC forward Jarrod Jones, who leads the team by a wide margin in points per game (17.1) and rebounds per game (8.8). The Ball State offense, which posts an average of 65.7 points per game, is fueled by senior point guard Randy Davis and his 5.8 assists per game. More impressively, Davis has a nearly 4-to-1 assist/turnover ratio. Led by fifth-year head coach Billy Taylor, Ball State has hung its hat on defense, allowing under 59 points per game so far this season. Most recently, the team has dropped two straight games to MAC East opponents thanks to losses at home against Akron and on the road against Ohio.

The game will come after football's national signing day event. Fans can join Coach Quinn, his coaching staff and members of the football team for a meet at Alumni Arena. As part of UB Basketball's Wing Wednesday festivities, enjoy free wings (while supplies last) and take advantage of the opportunity to talk with players and coaches about the 2012 football season.

Time Warner Cable SportsNet will be carrying the television broadcast, and fans can also tune into 1230 AM WECK with Josh Whetzel and Pete Lonergan on the call.
