Javon McCrea Poised for Breakout Season According to SI.com
University at Buffalo forward Javon McCrea was selected by SportsIllustrated.com as one of five players in college basketball poised to have a breakout season in 2011-12. The website used the SI.com Breakout Sophomore Formula “to identify players who showed signs of potential stars as freshmen, but weren’t on the floor for enough minutes to look like stars on a traditional stat sheet.”

Former Nichols School standout Will Regan, who played at Virginia last season, has signed a scholarship agreement to attend the University at Buffalo. Regan will have to sit out the 2011-12 season per NCAA transfer rules, but will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2012-13 season.

The top-seeded Kent State Golden Flashes got out to a 41-25 halftime lead and were able to overcome a furious Buffalo rally in the second half to defeat the Bulls, 73-62, in the quarterfinals of the 2011 FirstEnergy Mid-American Conference Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena on Thursday night. The loss ends Buffalo’s season at 18-13.

The University at Buffalo men’s basketball team dropped a road contest at Youngstown State on Tuesday night for their first loss of the season. It was fitting the Bulls were playing the Penguins because it was cold shooting that cost UB in the game.

Byron Mulkey last started for the Bulls on March 12, 2008. The senior point guard made up for lost time in the season opener, racking up 16 points, seven rebounds, 10 assists and seven steals in Buffalo’s 88-46 win over Navy at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon.
