Pitching Leads to Series Win at Longwood

FARMVILLE, VA - One of the strongest pitching performances of the early season was more than enough to offset a slow day offensively for UB, as the Bulls (6-4) earned a 3-2 win in the rubber match of a three game weekend series at Longwood (4-5). Mike Burke earned his second win of the season after allowing just two runs in seven innings, and River McWilliams earned his third save of the season.
After the Lancers scored in the bottom of the first, the Bulls tied things up in the very next inning. Mike Scarcello led off with a double down the left field line, and he would move to third on a single from Ryan Tulloch. The Lancers would turn a double play, but Scarcello would come home on the play.
The Bulls would take the lead for good in the fourth thanks to Tulloch's second hit of the day. A leadoff walk for Alex Baldock and a single from Thomas Richards got the team in business quickly, and a Scarcello sacrifice bunt would put them both in scoring position with only one out. Tulloch would score Baldock, but the Bulls would hold the runner at third. Richards would be stranded, as Longwood turned a double play to end the inning.
Buffalo's final run would come in the sixth, when Richards drove in Tyler Mautner on a one-out double into the left center gap. Richards and Tulloch were the lone Bulls to record multiple hits on the day, as the team had eight hits overall.
The offense was able to have a relative off day thanks to Burke's performance. The junior righty struck out six and walked only one batter en route to his second straight quality start. He now lowers his season earned run average to 3.66 and is 2-0. For the game, Burke pitched to four or few batters in six of his seven total innings.
He was lifted in the eighth for McWilliams, who kept Longwood hitless for two straight innings and earned his third save of the season. He had three saves in all of last season, and his six career saves move him into the top four on the career record list.
Next up for the team is a three-game series next weekend at Memphis. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Tigers are 7-3 for the season coming into today.
