Offense Fizzles in Loss to Toledo
TOLEDO, OH - After a power surge led the team to a series-opening win on Friday, the Buffalo offense went quiet Saturday afternoon, losing 3-0 to the Toledo Rockets (24-22, 13-7 MAC). Jeff Thompson allowed two runs to take the tough loss, and Mike Burke led Buffalo (13-30, 6-13 MAC) with two hits.
After being frustrated in the series opener, the Rockets got on the board early with a two-out run in the bottom of the first off Thompson. The senior starter was able to work around jams throughout the afternoon, including a bases-loaded situation in the fourth inning when a potential run was thrown out at the plate thanks to a perfect toss from Dan Scahill in right field.
In the seventh, Toledo were able to beat the tag at home this time around to make the score 2-0. another insurance run would come in the eighth off of reliever Kevin Crumb for the final margin.
The UB offense put runners in scoring position in the third, seventh, and eighth innings but could not convert with a clutch hit. Tom Murphy had a hit and a walk, and River McWilliams went 1-2 with a sacrifice.
Still aiming to win its second straight conference weekend series, the Bulls will face the Rockets at 1:05 tomorrow in the rubber match of the series against the MAC West leader.
