BUFFALO, NY – 30 student-athletes from the University at Buffalo Division of Athletics took part in their annual UB A Fit Kid Day back in late April. This year the group visited 50 4th and 5th grade students at Union East Elementary School in Cheektowaga, where they put the kids through various stations from basketball drills to an obstacle course to a nutrition lesson testing their knowledge of sugar. UB A Fit Kid is a day designed to show kids the importance of fitness, nutrition, and a healthy lifestyle.
“The best thing about the UB A Fit Kid Day is that it shows kids just how much fun exercise can be,” said Beth Christensen, senior to be on the women’s basketball team and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President. “It was definitely a great opportunity to teach kids about being fit and making healthy choices. Plus, they get to be around some amazing Division I athletes in the process.”
The event was originally planned to be outdoors, but was forced inside due to rain. In addition to the basketball drills, obstacle course and nutrition stations, there was also stations for fitness testing, scooter tag and agility. The kids ended the day with a choice of an apple, banana, or granola bar as well as a UB t-shirt.
The Bulls in the Community program culminates with this annual event, which highlights the student-athletes’ interest in working with the youth in our community around healthy behaviors, exercise, and nutrition.
